River Oak Center for Children: Make Parenting a Pleasure

Make Parenting a Pleasure is a 13-week parenting class offered at the River Oak Family
Resource Center that is designed to teach parents the importance of taking care of
themselves so they can better care for their children. The class covers topics such as
self-care, stress and anger management, communication skills, positive approaches to
discipline, and other topics. The curriculum is also provided to a "dads only" group, which is
also offered in Spanish. The course builds on family strengths and helps parents of all ages
develop a strong support network.

Make Parenting a Pleasure has been shown by research to significantly reduce parenting
factors that may lead to child abuse, such as parent stress levels and harsh parenting, and
increase parental feelings of confidence. The course satisfies the Child Protective Services
court-ordered requirement.

Make Parenting a Pleasure is one of three effective parenting classes funded by First 5
Sacramento that are offered at the Family Resource Center. Learn about the other two
