River Oak organizes family events for our children and families several times a year, as they
offer a wonderful way for parents and caregivers to get together, relieve some stress, and
reduce the sense of isolation that often affects these families. At the same time, the children
forget – even if just for a little while – about their challenges and enjoy time to play and simply
have fun.

Events held throughout the year include:

Picnic in the Park. Every summer, River Oak hosts a picnic at a local park where River Oak     children, teens, and their families enjoy a day of socializing and having fun. The 2010 family     picnic will be held in August and will have a nutrition and wellness theme, featuring fresh
produce at no cost to our families, informational booths, and a wellness presentation by Kaiser     Permanente’s Educational Theatre Program.

River Oak Children’s Day at Funderland. Every June, Funderland opens for a few hours
exclusively to the children and families of River Oak, thanks to the generosity of Funderland
owner Sam Johnston. In 2010, close to 600 children and caregivers were treated to complete
use of the park, with unlimited rides and sno-cones at no charge to the families.

Annual Fall Fun Festival and Health Fair. This yearly event in October at the Family
    Resource Center
features a Health Fair with 28 local community partners distributing free     information on health resources available to local families. Families are treated to pizza,
salad, ice cream sundaes, face painting, games, crafts, and small pumpkins to take home.

Sun River Church Holiday Party. Every December, Sun River Church in Rancho Cordova
hosts a holiday party for River Oak children, teens, and their families. Church members
personally shop for all the children in each family, and wrapped presents are given to parents
to take home and be put under the tree. Kids also have the chance to “shop” for surprise gifts
for their parents. Families have a wonderful time at the party, which includes a puppet show,
holiday songs, food, balloons, games, and of course, Santa!
