For the first several years of Sam's life, all he knew was extreme trauma and neglect. He was
placed in the care of his grandfather, who feared he might have to place Sam in out-of-home
care because he could no longer manage his behaviors. Sam's clinical team member
recommended that Sam receive a psychological assessment to focus his treatment
appropriately.

Psychological and Psychiatric services are available to all qualified children receiving River
Oak services and to the community in general, upon referral by the Sacramento County Child
and Family Access Team, Department of Health and Human Services Division of Mental Health
(916-875-9980). Services include psychological and psychiatric testing, treatment planning
and consultation, Alta California Regional Center assessment and consultation, behavioral
analysis and intervention, and medication monitoring.

Sam's assessment revealed that he was struggling with symptoms of trauma and Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). His psychologist worked with Sam's school to make
accommodations for his symptoms, leading the school to develop a full Individualized
Education Program for Sam. Eventually, Sam's family understood that his behaviors were not
driven by defiance, but due to psychological problems.

Sam's behavior and grades improved, and he was able to keep living with his grandfather.
Most importantly, Sam no longer sees himself as a failure.
