Intern selection. River Oak Center for Children
utilizes the APPIC match procedure for selecting interns. In compliance
with the agency equal opportunity and non discriminatory position
all interested students are sent an internship application packet.
Intern applicants are considered for the internship when the completed
APPIC application and readiness form, writing sample, letters of recommendation,
official transcripts, vita and personal statement are received. Applicant
packets are reviewed by a subcommittee of the training staff. Each
packet is evaluated by selection committee members and a numerical
summary calculated. Top Candidates are then selected for interviews.
Candidates are required to have completed 700 hours of clinical experiences
prior to the internship. Candidates are interviewed by staff psychologists.
Staff answer any questions that the intern applicant has about the
internship following an introduction to the internship program and
the agency by the interviewer(s). Applicants are questioned about
their professional interest in River Oak Center for Children, their
background and experience in clinical work with children (assessment
and psychotherapy), their internship training goals. Candidates are
rated by interviewers, and then a rank ordering of the candidates
is mathematically constructed by the director of training based on
the numerical ratings of the interviewers and the applicant file review
by staff psychologists. Transcripts are utilized to document appropriate
background education and training and are not evaluated by grades
received. Desirable applicants possess a strong academic and clinical
background in psychological assessment and psychotherapy with diverse
children, adolescents and families. Final rank ordering is constructed
following a training staff meeting in which each of the final candidates
are discussed and given a ranking. The Director of Training retains
final decision making in situations of ambiguity or uncertainty. Rankings
are forwarded to the APPIC match service by the Internship Director.
Successful candidates must be able to pass a background check (DOJ),
DMV check, and TB test.
Practicum and academic preparation requirements.
Interns are expected to have completed a minimum of 700 hours of clinical
experience and have completed the course work for the doctoral degree
in psychology. While dissertation is not required to be completed
prior to internship, it is recommended as the internship is an intensive
year of training and experience independent of dissertation work.
Students must be enrolled and in good standing with their own doctoral
program during the internship year.
