An
All Around, Wraparound Success Story
Several years ago, Wraparound began providing services to three children
from the same family who were removed from their home due to abuse,
neglect, and an infant death. When these children (all under the age
of 10) were placed into foster care their behaviors presented a variety
of challenges to the foster parents. Attendance at school was sporadic
at best, leaving them significantly behind in academic progress. The
children had not learned even the most basic skills, such as appropriate
table manners or the tying of shoes. Each child had developed very differently
in response to their environment. Where one child was very “loud”,
and the behaviors proactive, another child was silent and showed no
emotion. The latter of the two was the child who was “ignored”
for several years. In fact, this child is still learning to be aware
of and recognize his own emotions.
With Wraparound’s unique model of service delivery, the Family
Facilitator worked with the foster families to ensure that the children
were safe, that their medical needs were addressed, and that they were
enrolled in an educational setting appropriate to their needs. As there
was a history of trauma, the children were also seen regularly by a
therapist to assist them in dealing with what they had experienced.
Skills Trainers were assigned to teach the children the most basic of
social skills, such as following instructions and learning to tie one’s
shoes. Temper Tamers curriculum was used extensively to help the children
learn anger management skills, and in the past few months basic moral
reasoning skills have been introduced.
Today, the children are placed in outstanding foster homes; they have
learned to trust their foster parents and have built healthy attachment
to them. The foster parents have expressed the desire to obtain guardianship
if needed. The children are doing very well in school — both behaviorally
and academically — and they have learned to play some sports and
ride horses. They have met their treatment goals, and Wraparound services
have decreased to a minimum until the children return to court within
the next few months to determine the status of the parents. If possible,
Wraparound will extend services to the parents and assist them with
reunification.

a helping hand to children like these to find loving families.
