Kids
Are Not Always Born with Families
(FOCUS Program)
One of the most rewarding aspects of our service is finding a permanent
home for a child who had fought for his or her survival for years. Even
more rewarding is reuniting the child with a close family member. This
is what happened to Drake. But not before he went through several years
of uncertainty and confusion.
Due to physical abuse and neglect, Drake and his four siblings were
placed in a group home and then – into another. His behavior was
a scream for help but there was nobody to hear him. After he started
receiving services through the FOCUS program, he slowly started showing
positive, though difficult, changes in his behavior. The team worked
with him on improving his ability to express his feelings in a safe
manner, and his functioning in school. Even more importantly, the program
staff encouraged and facilitated visits from the boy’s grandmother.
The bond between him and his grandmother grew stronger as they got to
know better each other until she decided to become Drake’s caregiver.
After months of preparation and hard work the judge granted her request
and he was placed in her care. Now, a year later, the boy and one of
his siblings are safe in the home of their grandmother as they continue
to face courageously their challenges but not alone.
Many other children like Drake can use the support and care of somebody
who loves them. Help
them find that special person and be ready to accept him or her in their
lives.
