Baby Steps Toward Erasing the Damage of the Past
(Building Blocks Program)

David was only one-year-old when he was removed from his maternal grandmother’s house due to neglect and since then spend 3 years in multiple foster families until he met his adoptive parents. He was exposed to drugs when his mother was pregnant and he never lived with his birth parents. There were suspicions of past sexual abuse which have recently been confirmed. A year ago he began treatment with the Building Blocks program at River Oak. He was only 6 years old.

When he came to River Oak, David was aggressive toward peers and family pets, he was often fidgety and restless, had nightmares and troubles sleeping; he would withdraw or tantrum when upset. He was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Disruptive Behavior Disorder. He also has several medical issues that affect his functioning. David and his parents have participated in weekly sessions, extensive psycho-education and the Incredible Years parenting group for the parents, a social skills group for David, and community outings for David and his clinician. David also receives psychiatric services at River Oak.

It is not surprising that the boy gets really upset when addressing difficult issues, particularly events that happened in his past. He takes a long time to calm down. But progress has been made. His program staff have accompanied him and his parents to his new school and have been a strong advocate for him. His teacher refers to him as a “mini therapist” since he volunteers to help other children resolve their conflicts by encouraging them to “use your words” and “say how you feel”. He has built a close and affectionate relationship with his adoptive parents and one of his adoptive grandmothers. It is rewarding to see him practice the skills he has learned and his parents supporting him every step of the way.

Although he will continue to experience challenges related to his past abuse and neglect, he has found a family that loves his and services that help him grow. As he gets older, he will continue services with another program but his clinician will continue to be involved in his care to ensure consistency.

Give similar chances to young kids like David to find healing and hope for the future.
